Vienna's summer calendar has always run on repetition. Kids on the Green on Tuesdays, the farmers market on Saturdays, Chillin' on Church on the third Friday of the month. What changed this year is the block around those rhythms. Six new businesses have opened or are opening within a short walk of the Town Green, and most of them landed close enough to a standing event that the smart move is to pair them, not schedule around them.
The pairing logic
The temptation with a wave of openings is to treat each one as its own errand. That works in a bigger town. In Vienna, where the whole downtown fits inside a fifteen-minute walk, it doubles your trips for no reason. Kin Espresso Bar sits on Church Street NW. The Freeman Store sits on Church Street NE. The Town Green is between them. The new Maple Avenue arrivals cluster within a few blocks of each other. Tuesday morning: coffee first, then the Town Green
Kids on the Green runs at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays at 144 Maple Avenue East, and it is free. The remaining programs on the summer schedule include The Grandsons Jr. on August 4. Bring a blanket. If the weather looks marginal, the Town keeps an inclement-weather line at 703-255-7842 so you are not guessing from your kitchen window.
The pairing here is Kin Espresso Bar, which soft-launched on July 6 at 145 Church Street NW as a family-owned café drawing on Japanese coffeehouse culture, serving specialty coffee, ceremonial matcha, hot chocolate, and desserts, with a Church Street location that makes it a natural stop before or after a Town Green program. Walk over from Kin, spend an hour on the Green, and you are done before the heat builds.
If you have a slightly older kid and Tuesday is booked, Historic Vienna, Inc. runs Stories and Sprinklers on July 22 and July 29 at 10 a.m., where families gather behind the Freeman Store at 131 Church Street NE for a story program near the patio and Town Green. Same corridor. Same coffee stop on the way in.
Third Friday: block party plus the new steakhouse next door
Chillin' on Church is the summer event with the most staying power in Vienna's calendar. It runs on Historic Church Street every third Friday from July through September, with food, local beer and wine, music, and family-friendly activities, and admission is free.
The pairing on Church Street already exists. The bigger news is one block over on Maple. Electric Bull, a steakhouse and butcher's counter that caters to people who want to try at home what they order at the restaurant, is opening at 176 Maple Avenue West. It is the latest project from Chef Victor Albisu, whose earlier ventures include Taco Bamba. For a resident, the practical read is that Church Street already handles the Friday-evening social side, and Maple now handles the sit-down side, and they are close enough to string together on the same night if you want to skip the Chillin' food lines.
The town's food scene is not a rumor. In late February 2026, more than 40 restaurants took part in Vienna Restaurant Week, an annual event that celebrates the town's culinary community with prix fixe menus, discounts, and a la carte specials. Six months later, the roster is bigger.
What actually opened on Maple
The Maple Avenue cluster is worth knowing by name, because the new arrivals cover very different needs and you will not remember them all otherwise.

A few of these deserve more than a line.
Bagel Street. The family-owned café had its grand opening in early April and has been earning accolades since, with a menu that runs "Breakfast Boulevard, Bagel Circle, Coffee Drive, Chips District," and owners Jenny Liu and Julio Santana who told Fairfax Girl the menu incorporates elements from both heritages, with Chinese flavors like seaweed, miso and Chinese sausage and Dominican flavors like fried cheese and Dominican salami. That is not a chain-formula menu. If you have been driving to Tysons for weekend bagels, stop.
Bakeshop. Bakeshop is opening in Vienna to join locations in Arlington, Great Falls and Georgetown, and their various locations have won Best Bakery awards for many of the past 10 years, with their chocolate chip cookies called best in the state in 2022 in Yelp's official blog. The opening was originally set for early April but has hit delays; the address is 421 Maple Avenue East. Worth checking status before you drive.
Gem Park. Gem Park offers fine stone jewelry, engagement rings, custom designs, and fashion jewelry, with owner Jamie Park-Jung describing an approach "rooted in clean lines and architectural sensibility with unexpected details," pieces "beautiful but made to be worn every day," made with quality gemstones and ethically sourced metal; the shop and studio are at 134 Maple Avenue West. This is the sort of business that changes what you have to leave town for.
Shipley Do-Nuts. A representative told Northern Virginia Magazine, "We look forward to opening the first Shipley Donuts in Vienna on Maple Avenue in 2026, bringing our famous handmade fresh daily donuts and kolaches to the community." Kolaches are the reason to care. If you have not had one, they are Eastern European stuffed pastries, and Shipley does savory versions with bacon, egg, cheese, or jalapeño.
When outdoors is the wrong idea
Some July mornings will not cooperate. The trail options in Vienna are still there when the Town Green is not.
The W&OD Trail remains one of Vienna's most useful summer amenities for walking, running, and cycling. NOVA Parks has announced possible short closures during July and August 2026, but those interruptions concern the Arlington section near Glencarlyn Park, and the notice does not close the Vienna segment. Good to know before you plan a long ride east.
For a more wooded setting, Northside Park and the Maud Robinson Wildlife Preserve offer 26 acres at Mill and Glyndon streets, with a stream and walking paths for varying ability levels, open from daylight to dusk. This is a quieter alternative than the Green when a program gets rained out.
The Freeman Store itself is an indoor fallback. The Freeman Store and Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.
Circle October 3
The last thing worth putting on the calendar now is not a summer event. Vienna Oktoberfest is Saturday, October 3, 2026 from 11:00 AM to 7:00 PM on Historic Church Street and the Town Green, one of the top Vienna events of the fall. The festival spans Church Street, Dominion Road, Mill Street, and the Town Green, admission is completely free, and it happens rain or shine with no rain date. If you own on any of those blocks, plan parking accordingly. If you host out-of-town family in early October, this is your excuse to walk them through downtown.
A Vienna-specific note for homeowners
One detail worth remembering, because it comes up when people compare Vienna to unincorporated Fairfax County: town residents pay an additional property tax on top of the county rate. As of 2026, the Town of Vienna rate is $0.195 per $100 of assessment, and that funds services including trash and recycling for residents. The trade is what you are reading about in this post. A downtown that pays for itself in event programming, sidewalk life, and small-business density is not free, and it does not exist in most nearby zip codes.
That is the actual argument for choosing a home inside Vienna's town limits over a Vienna mailing address in the county. The summer calendar is the visible piece. The businesses opening around it are the harder-to-copy piece. Together they are the reason the walk from Church Street to Maple Avenue does not feel like a commercial strip.
